What is the Classic Salmon Program?

The Classic Salmon Program is a cooperative project between the Department of Inland  Fisheries and Wildlife and the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, which is focusing on increasing the size of Salmon in selected waters.  It's efforts will be directed to advance the Management Programs necessary on these select waters to enable landlocked salmon to reach their water specific maximum size, thus providing more diversity in fishing opportunities by increasing the number of 5 pound plus landlocked salmon available to anglers.  It is important to note that this initiative is only intended for a small group of waters that have the potential to grow trophy salmon and provide that opportunity for the significant number of anglers who desire it.

How Did it Come About?

The Fisheries Division and SAM actually had similar plans in place that made a perfect opportunity for a cooperative effort.  The Fisheries Division's 15 year plan included a  group of waters designated as "Size Quality Waters," and SAM's Fishing Initiative Committee had a plan they coined Maine's "Classic Salmon Program," which had basically the same goals.  After a few meetings between members of SAM's Fishing Initiative Committee and members of Maine's Fisheries Division, it was decided that a survey of Maine anglers should be done to determine the level of public support.  Using funds provided by SAM and Trout Unlimited, the Fisheries Division conducted a statewide survey, and it was found that a significant number of Maine anglers were supportive of both the concept and the management tools necessary to produce these large fish.
